Converting a short stroke case to
accept a long stroke crank

Before we get too far into this, please be sure you understand the difference between the long stroke (late) and short stroke (early) cranks, and the reason for clearancing the case as we'll describe below.

I have another website dedicated to this information. You might want to check it out before you go any further

This is what the inside of the "early" case looks like before any clearance work begins.

I started the job by making a cardboard template of the area I needed to relieve.

Using the template I drew lines on the case (with a Sharpe) of where I needed to remove material.

This would be the desired result.

And this is my result, using a 90° attachment on my Dremel, using the drum sanding tool.
One tip I like to give when I suggest the drum sander is to get your drums from Sears.
Sears offers drums in bulk at a fraction of the price of anywhere else. They are Sears
brand (maybe even Craftsman) not Dremel proper.

Mondo Caveat: Like with all my stuff, this particular modification
HAS NOT BEEN FLOWN
by me or anyone I know.

I have been advised that this may not be the best thing to do and it was suggested to
me that the early case is "not as strong" as the late case. There was no
further explanation to this comment offered. I merely pass it along as food for thought.
